Description
Upgrading and replacement of the reserve’s former sewerage septic system with an environmentally sensitive on-site sewerage treatment plant.
Our Role
NOHC conducted the cultural heritage assessment for the upgrade works. A recommendation to revise the original proposal to avoid impact to a significant archaeological deposit detected through test excavation was adopted by the proponent.
Features
Aboriginal community consultation, archaeological survey and site recording, mechanical archaeological test excavation, and report preparation. The test excavation program revealed the remains of an Aboriginal hearth which was dated to 12,000 years Before Present, at a depth of 1.5 m below current ground level. This project demonstrated the advantages of the use of mechanical excavation to sample deep deposits in an archaeological test excavation context.
